PSG earmark Benfica’s João Neves as priority target

Paris Saint-Germain have identified Benfica midfielder João Neves (19) as a priority target in midfield this summer, according to a report from Le Parisien.

Despite only signing Manuel Ugarte one season ago, PSG are back in the market for a defensive midfielder. The Uruguay international arrived for big money from the Portuguese top flight, however, despite a positive start to life at the Parc des Princes, his limitations became clear. He was used less frequently as the season progressed with Luis Enrique deeming Ugarte’s lack of quality in possession as an issue, especially against tougher, UEFA Champions League-level opponents.

He may therefore leave Les Parisiens this summer and Manchester United have even already submitted a bid, according to L’Équipe. Neves could represent the perfect replacement. The Portuguese international, who plays in defensive midfield, is more at ease in possession. However, Le Parisien report that there is competition to sign Neves; Fabrice Hawkins has previously evoked interest from Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United.

The asking price, thought to be over €100m, could also prove a sticking point, however, Le Parisien understands that PSG “have their heart set” on a move for Neves.
