As explained by Luis Enrique himself in his pre-match press conference this afternoon, the Spanish head coach has decided to delegate the task of naming the team’s captain to the players themselves.
The former Spain and Barcelona manager explained that a vote had been held among the players during the week. According to RMC Sport later in the afternoon, the Ligue 1 champions’ squad as a whole have decided to put their faith in Marquinhos to continue as the team’s skipper.
The Brazilian, who has been at the club for the past decade after his move from Roma, was named captain after the summer of 2020, in the wake of defensive partner and compatriot Thiago Silva’s departure. Despite his middling form last season, and reports of a potential drop in the pecking order, Marquinhos will continue in the role. Having started on the bench in the opening-day 0-0 draw against Lorient, the 29-year-old will lead the squad for tomorrow’s trip to Toulouse.
