L’Équipe are reporting that Bayern Munich’s local rivals, Munich 1860, have handed their support to Paris Saint-Germain, who will face the German champions in their Champions League second leg on Wednesday.
Munich is known for its football side, and the Allianz Arena is one of the most iconic stadiums, not only in Europe but in the world. However, there is another team based in the Bavarian capital – Munich 1860. The club have been competing in the third tier of German football since 2018, and are currently in 8th.
Bayern can’t count on Munich solidarity when PSG come to town on Wednesday. “The typical Munich resident supports Munich 1860, whilst Bayern supporters come from across the country and even from abroad. I don’t know one 1860 fan that will be supporting Bayern on Wednesday. Solidarity between Munich residents doesn’t, nor will it ever exist,” said Oliver Griss, who runs Die Blaue 24, a daily news site dedicated to Munich 1860.
Within this context, Bayern Munich’s fans will be lending their support to PSG on the night. “We will support PSG, because, above all, we’ll be against Bayern. We’ll drink with the Parisians in the city and wish them luck. If they want, we can teach them some anti-Bayern chants,” said Hans, a 60-year-old Munich 1860 fan.
Another Munich 1860 fan, who says he has no affinity with PSG apart from his admiration for Kylian Mbappé (24), says he will go to a bar near the stadium to watch the match, whilst wearing a PSG scarf. He added, “If PSG qualify, the beer will flow.”
PSG need to overturn a one-goal deficit at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday if they are to avoid another early exit from the Champions League.
