The Jamaican sprint icon is hoping a trial spell with Central Coast Mariners will lead to him earning a professional contract in the world of football
Usain Bolt is a “phenomenal athlete” and would be a great addition for the A-League if he signs a deal with Central Coast Mariners, says former Newcastle Jets striker Emile Heskey.
The retired sprinter, who won eight Olympic gold medals during an iconic athletics career, is looking to move into football at the age of 32.
He has been given an opportunity to prove himself in Australia, with a training stint with the Gosford-based Mariners offering him a chance to earn a professional contract.
Bolt made his bow during a friendly contest back in August and Heskey, who spent two years in the A-League between 2012 and 2014, believes his signing would make sporting and commercial sense.
The ex-Liverpool and England forward told the Daily Star: “Why not?
“If I could be a sprinter, an over 40s sprinter, I’d try that.
“He’s a phenomenal athlete, isn’t he?
“If he feels that he can play football and he’s at a reasonable level, why not?
“It’s a great opportunity for him to play in a good league as well.
“I enjoyed my time in Australia, great memories and great people down there and they love their football. So yeah why not?
“I think for the profile it’s great for the league.
“I’m guessing it’ll be watched all over the place now he’s down there because he brings so much of a fanbase to that footballing country.”
Bolt remains on trial with the Mariners at present, with the Manchester United supporter having made no secret of his desire to prove himself on the football field after stepping away from the running track.
