Pique back to his best and other reasons for Barcelona's improved defence

From a defensive standpoint, this has not been Barcelona's best year, having already conceded 19 goals in LaLiga Santander, but the Catalan side have built some momentum from the back - starting with Gerard Pique - and they have now gone three league matches without conceding a goal.

The 31-year-old made errors in the matches against Girona and Leganes, yet his performance against Levante was spectacular as he acted as the undoubted leader in defence.

Without Nelson Semedo, Ernesto Valverde shifted to a three-man defence, with Ousmane Dembele acting as a right wing-back in Semedo's absence, and the continuity of clean sheets continued.

Barcelona appear to have rediscovered the intensity of their pressing in recent weeks, beginning in the midfield as Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic played a crucial role in winning the ball back in the build-up to Barcelona's first two goals on Sunday night.

Alongside Busquets and Rakitic is Arturo Vidal, a key cog in Valverde's midfield machine; he provides great balance and brings a solidity to the core of the team, something that has been missing in Barcelona's most difficult moments this season.

The importance of Rakitic cannot be understated, however, as the Croat showed his versatility by playing at centre-back for the final 30 minutes of the match against Levante, doing so with total confidence, and it is a luxury to have a player that can assume so many different responsibilities.

In goal, Barcelona have one of the world's best goalkeepers in Marc-Andre ter Stegen; he may not always have a plethora of shots to save, but when they do arrive the German is always ready, as he was on the few occasions that Levante went looking for their first goal of the night.
