Pique optimistic Messi will extend his Barca deal and says he 'looks happier'

Gerard Pique says he is unsure of 'what is going to happen' over Lionel Messi's future at Barcelona but claims the striker looks 'happier' as of late.

The Argentine's contract with the Catalans is set to expire in the summer, and Messi has not yet committed his future to Barcelona with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City interested.

However, Pique insists the club will 'support his decision' and says they should remain 'grateful for what he has done' for the LaLiga giants.

Despite spending 13 years alongside Messi at the Nou Camp, Pique is still none the wiser as to his thought process for next season.

When speaking to Moviestar, he said: 'I couldn't tell you what's going to happen with him.

'I think in recent months he looks happier. That's important.

'He impacts the team because he is the captain and influences the whole team. The club is doing very well and much of it is because of him.

'Messi has been with us in the team for several years. We know him well, and we will support his decision.

'We should be grateful for what he has done.'

However, Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently said he was confident that Messi would sign a contract extension at the club.

'Everything [that has to do with Messi's renewal] is progressing adequately,' Laporta told LaSexta's show 'Jugones' on Friday.
