Pochettino remains Madrid's No 1 choice to replace under-fire Zidane (Mirror)

Mauricio Pochettino is still Real Madrid's No 1 choice should they decide to sack Zinedine Zidane.

This is despite Tottenham's slow start to the season which leaves them 10 points off league leaders Liverpool already.

Spurs have won just two of their first six league games this season and lost their last game at Leicester 2-1 on Saturday.

Nevertheless, according to the Mirror, Los Blancos were impressed by Pochettino reaching last season's Champions League final and believe that is enough evidence he is ready to manage at the Bernabeu.

The north London club will be determined to keep hold of Pochettino who is on £8.5million a year.

There have been concerns that Pochettino was frustrated by last summer's transfer window and may be interested in a move away.

Madrid president Florentiono Perez is a big fan of Pochettino and is unlikely to be dissuaded by the Argentine signing a five-year contract in 2018.

The La Liga side will move for Pochettino if he gives them any indication he is ready to jump ship.

Zidane guided Los blancos to second in the league after beating Sevilla but they lost 3-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in their first Champions League group game last week.
