Premier League: This was the season that wiped out home advantage... so how did your club perform?

  /  autty

Well, there we have it. The most unusual of Premier League campaigns has finally reached its conclusion.

It was dramatic until the death, with Chelsea and Liverpool nicking a Champions League spot ahead of Leicester. But given the lack of crowds for the majority of the season due to coronavirus restrictions, the usual mantra of home advantage was completely wiped out.

And boy did it show at times. Exactly half of the teams fared better on the road than they did on their own patch and here Sportsmail takes a deep dive into the numbers for all sides, home and away.

ARSENAL (finished 8th)

Home: W8, D4, L7, PTS 28 - 9th in home league table

It's been a tough season at the Emirates, with four losses on the trot in a horror November-December period hard to erase from the mind.

Away: W10, D3, L6, PTS 33 - 7th in away league table

The Gunners got the majority of their wins on the road, with notable victories at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford amid a difficult season for Mikel Arteta's team.

ASTON VILLA (finished 11th)

Home: W7, D4, L8, PTS 25 - 11th

A strong start to the campaign - including that 7-2 win over Liverpool - fell away towards the end, though the final-day victory at home to Chelsea will be immensely satisfying as fans returned to Villa Park for the first time in 2020-21.

Away: W9, D3, L7, PTS 30 - 9th

A 3-0 victory at the Emirates in November was perhaps the highlight - with Ollie Watkins, Jack Grealish and Ross Barkley purring in tandem.

BRIGHTON (finished 16th)

Home: W4, D9, L6, PTS 21 - 16th

While nine draws may look like a lot of dropped points, they were crucial points as teams around them slumped to numerous defeats - the Seagulls lost as many as home as dethroned champions Liverpool and second-placed Manchester United.

Away: W5, D5, L9, PTS 20 - 14th

The victory at Anfield in February was probably the highlight, though a big win at Southampton a month later was also important in sealing Brighton's Premier League status for another season.

BURNLEY (finished 17th)

Home: W4, D6, L9, PTS 18 - 17th

Like the majority of teams, Burnley also struggled at Turf Moor, winning just four times out of 19 games on their own patch.

Away: W6, D3, L10, PTS 21 - 13th

Much better away form saw them avoid the drop. Like Brighton, a late win at Liverpool was particularly memorable, as was a 4-0 win at Wolves a few weeks back.

CHELSEA (finished 4th)

Home: W9, D6, L4, PTS 33 - 4th

The Blues were one of the best-performing teams at home and yet their away record was still stronger. Results at the Bridge definitely picked up when Thomas Tuchel took over in late January, with their recent win over rivals Leicester ultimately crucial.

Away: W10, D4, L5, PTS 36 - 6th

A victory over the champions two weeks ago was the standout display and - looking back - Marcos Alonso's injury-time winner was vital in the Blues making the top four.

CRYSTAL PALACE (finished 14th)

Home: W6, D5, L8, PTS 23 - 15th

Palace were one of the few teams who accumulated more points at home than away - the Eagles were unbeaten against the likes of Tottenham, Leicester and Man Utd at Selhurst Park.

Away: W6, D3, L10, PTS 21 - 14th

They started the season with a 3-1 win at Old Trafford - and it never got much better than that for Roy Hodgson's team.

EVERTON (finished 10th)

Home: W6, D4, L9, PTS 22 - 15th

Carlo Ancelotti's struggled at home - badly. Recent defeats to Sheffield United and Aston Villa sum up a torrid season at Goodison for the Toffees.

Away: W11, D4, L4, PTS 37 - 4th

Yet on the road, Ancelotti's side were the standouts outside of the European places. A first win at Anfield in the 21st century was undoubtedly the highlight.

FULHAM (finished 18th)

Home: W2, D4, L13, PTS 10 - 20th

The worst performing side at home in the league, Craven Cottage was anything but a fortress this season for Scott Parker's relegated team.

Away: W3, D9, L7, PTS 18 - 17th

Fulham fared far better on the road, but nine draws still cost them, with their gut-wrenching dropped points late on at Arsenal indicative of their whole campaign of near-misses and 'if-only's'.

LEEDS (finished 9th)

Home: W8, D5, L6, PTS 29 - 7th

Marcelo Bielsa's side were impressive at Elland Road and, like their real finishing position, are in the top half for points won at home.

Away: W10, D0, L9, PTS 30 - 10th

Right from their first thrilling encounter on the road against Liverpool on the opening day, Leeds' free-flowing game was always going to make for some classic matches - the late win at champions City was one of the results of the season.

LIVERPOOL (finished 3rd)

Home: W10, D3, L6, PTS 33 - 5th

Following an astounding six losses on the trot after the turn of the year, the Reds turned around their home form as the season reached its finale.

Away: W10, D6, L3, PTS 36 - 5th

Jurgen Klopp's side were more successful on the road, beating the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal, and losing just three times in 19 games.

MANCHESTER CITY

Home: W13, D2, L4, PTS 41 - 1st

The top dogs in all departments, City actually lost twice as many games at the Etihad than on the road, but still led the home-form table by seven points.

Away: W14, D3, L2, PTS 45 - 1st

City were exemplary on the road, with a long unbeaten run between losing at Spurs in November and Brighton last week cementing their first-placed position throughout the season.

MANCHESTER UNITED (finished 2nd)

Home: W9, D4, L6, PTS 31 - 6th

This is where United let the title slip away. Hiccups at home to the likes of lowly Palace and Sheffield United were invaluable lost points in the race to be champions.

Away: W12, D7, L0, PTS 43 - 2nd

Quite the record to go an entire league season without losing on the road - only the fourth English side ever to do so - and yet their seven draws mean they just miss out to City at the top of the away-form table.

NEWCASTLE (finished 12th)

Home: W6, D5, L8, PTS 23 - 13th

Despite a season of various problems on Tyneside, Steve Bruce's side actually posted a better record at St James' Park, aided hugely by some late-season form.

Away: W6, D4, L9, PTS 22 - 12th

Marginally worse off on the road, Newcastle won three of their last four away games which included a 4-2 thrashing against FA Cup winners Leicester.

SHEFFIELD UTD (finished 20th)

Home: W5, D1, L13, PTS 16 - 18th

A season of disappointment after such immense promise in 2019-20. That being said, their record at home was twice as good as that on the road.

Away: W2, D1, L16, PTS 7 - 20th

A far cry from the squad of resilience the season before under Chris Wilder, the Blades were all too easily rolled over away from home, winning a mere seven points.

SOUTHAMPTON (finished 15th)

Home: W8, D3, L8, PTS 27

Unlike most teams this season, Southampton's home form is what kept them in the division amid a lack of positive results on the road.

Away: W4, D4, L11, PTS 16 - 18th

The Saints were in relegation form away from the south coast, the particular low-point a second 9-0 drubbing in two seasons, against Manchester United in February.

TOTTENHAM

Home: W10, D3, L6, PTS 33 - 3rd

People quickly forget their excellent early-season form, in which they beat City and Arsenal as they topped the table. Unfortunately, their form fluctuated immensely after that north London derby victory.

Away: W8, D5, L6, PTS 29 - 11th

Tottenham's downfall was very much on the road, winning less than half of their games. It did for them in Europe too, with that thrashing in Zagreb.

WEST BROM (finished 19th)

Home: W3, D6, L10, PTS 15 - 19th

West Brom performed better at home than on the road, but it was still nowhere near enough to save their skin. A boing boing-ing Hawthorns was sorely missed.

Away: W2, D5, L12, PTS 11 - 19th

Mediocre and often too easily rolled over, the Baggies were rarely a match for their hosts throughout this campaign, despite the lack of crowds.

WEST HAM (finished 6th)

Home: W10, D4, L5, PTS 34 - 2nd

The season's real surprise package, West Ham posted the second-best home record, a point ahead of Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool. Did they actually benefit from a lack of supporters, who often have very high expectations?

Away: W9, D4, L6, PTS 31 - 8th

Slightly weaker on the road, the Hammers still recorded notable triumphs at Leeds, Everton and Leicester. We also cannot forget that late fightback from three goals down to draw with London rivals Tottenham.

WOLVES (finished 13th)

Home: W7, D4, L8, PTS 25 - 12th

By the lofty standards they've set since arriving back in the Premier League, losing more home games than they won will be a disappointment to Wolves fans, particularly the nature of the defeats against Burnley and West Ham.

Away: W5, D5, L9, PTS 20 - 15th

But it was Nuno Espirito Santo's side's away form which really went amiss this time round, as they claimed just 20 points out of a possible 57.
