A Premier League footballer who was arrested on rape charges earlier this month has had his bail extended until October.

The player, who is 29 but cannot be named for legal reasons, was first arrested on July 4. The arrest came after a woman in her 20s alleged she was raped in June. Once in custody, the footballer was further arrested on two other incidents of rape, which were alleged to have happened to a different woman in her 20s in April and June of 2021.

While one of the charges has since been dropped by the police, the player remains under investigation over two of the alleged offences. His club were made aware of the allegations in the autumn, but chose not to suspend him and instead included him in their pre-season preparations.

Scotland Yard has now released a new statement which gives an update on the case. “On 4 July, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police,” the Met said in a statement issued to Mirror Football.

“It was reported the alleged rape happened in June 2022. On 4 July, a 29-year-old man was arrested at an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape and taken into custody. While in custody, he was further arrested on suspicion of two incidents of rape that were alleged to have been committed in April and June of 2021 against a different woman in her 20s.

“No further action will be taken in relation to the offence in June 2021 but the investigation into the remaining offences is ongoing.

“The man was initially bailed until a date in August but his bail has since been extended to a date in early October.”
