William and Kate led the royal celebrations after Aston Villa ended their 44-year wait for European glory with a dramatic Europa League final triumph in Istanbul.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, lifelong supporters of the Midlands club, shared an emotional message congratulating the players after the historic victory.

Posting after the final whistle, the couple said: 'Amazing night!! Huge congratulations to all the players, team, staff and everyone connected to the club! 44 years since the last taste of European silverware!

'Special shout out to Boubacar Kamara who has been out injured but is such an integral part of our team and helped lay the foundations of this success.'

William, patron of the Football Association, has passionately followed Villa since his schooldays and was among the thousands of travelling fans inside the stadium.

Before kick-off, Kensington Palace released the Prince's rallying cry to Unai Emery's side, declaring: 'Come on Villa! Good luck in tonight's Europa League final. UTV! W'.

The triumph marks Villa's first major European trophy since their famous European Cup victory over Bayern Munich in 1982 - just weeks before William was born.

There was no hiding his delight earlier this month when Unai Emery's men thrashed Nottingham Forest 4-0 at Villa Park to book their place in the final.

William was spotted punching the air in jubilation from the stands as the famous old ground erupted in celebration.

And the royal support did not end there. Following the emphatic victory, Emery later revealed that William had joined the squad in the dressing room for the post-match celebrations.

Last week, veteran football commentator Clive Tyldesley insisted William's devotion to the club is entirely authentic after meeting him at an investiture ceremony.

Tyldesley said: 'There's nothing manufactured about his love for his football team.

'He is not a supporter of the most famous club in the country. He's a supporter of a team that's had its highs and lows, and is just about to enjoy, hopefully, a wonderful high next week.'

He also described William's connection to Villa as a 'genuine link' between the Royal Family and the national game.
