Christian Pulisic has revealed that Frank Lampard told him to win the game for Chelsea when he brought him on against Aston Villa.

Pulisic was brought on in the 55th minute at Villa Park, with Chelsea trailing after Kortney Hause had given the hosts a surprise lead.

United States international Pulisic proceeded to follow Lampard's instructions as he found the net just five minutes after coming on. Olivier Giroud then proceeded to score what proved to be the winner for Chelsea.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Pulisic said: 'I’m really glad I could help the team. Obviously today that was with the goal and a good result.

'I was just told to go in and win us the game really, nothing special. Just needed to go in and use my talents.

'I don’t think I actually hit it perfect with my left but got enough to get it on target.

'Obviously its very difficult when you are playing with no fans and in different circumstances. I thought the team brought good energy and got a good result.'

Pulisic was making his first appearance since New Year's Day after struggling with a tear in his adductor.

However, the 21-year-old is now fit and is determined to finish the season strongly.

He continued: 'I have definitely been out for a while, It felt really nice to be out here after my injury but time to get back into a rhythm.

Asked whether something special is happening at Chelsea, who have agreed to bring in Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, Pulisic said: 'I think so (something special at Chelsea). We already have a strong team and very good players. We are focused on this season now but very excited for what to come.'

Chelsea's victory boosted their chances of securing Champions League qualification.

Lampard's side are currently in fourth place in the Premier League and are five points ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United.

They are back in action on Thursday when they host Manchester City.
