Match Report
Los Blancos have hit the ground running under new boss Xabi Alonso despite the impact of their much discussed shorter preseason campaign this summer.
Alonso’s charges edged past Osasuna in their opening game before cruising past Real Oviedo last weekend.
A return to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu just before the September international break proved to be exactly what the doctor ordered despite an early setback in Madrid.
Kylian Mbappe saw an early goal ruled out by a tight VAR call before Vedat Muriqi headed Mallorca in front.
However, the hosts showed grit just before the break, to go in 2-1 up at the break via the impressive Arda Guler and Vinicius Junior.
Guler bravely gambled on Dean Huijsen’s knock down to get the hosts on level terms before Vinicius’ slaloming run and finish secured the lead.
That response looked to power Real Madrid on in the second half, but technology was again to prove a barrier, with Guler seeing a goal ruled out for handball on 56 minutes.
Mallorca seized that let off as Jagoba Arrasate made a host of late changes but Real Madrid had enough to get over the line in front of a packed Bernabeu.
A third straight win now throws the focus back on defending champions Barcelona, who have also won two from two, ahead of a tricky trip Rayo Vallecano tomorrow to round off a busy first month back for the Spanish top-flight.
The majority of Alonso’s squad will now head away on international duty in the coming weeks before a return to action away at Real Sociedad on September 13.
