Match Report
Valverde plundered a 22-minute hat-trick in the first half at the Santiago Bernabeu to put Madrid, who were without the injured Kylian Mbappe, in control of the last-16 tie.
A frantic opening 20 minutes saw City pile on the pressure, but against the run of play, Thibaut Courtois' punt upfield caught out Nico O'Reilly, with Valverde capitalising to round Gianluigi Donnarumma and side-foot home.
Valverde doubled up seven minutes later, taking Vinicius Junior's deflected pass into his path and drilling a left-footed strike beyond Donnarumma.
The Madrid captain saved the best for last, though, as he latched onto a delicate lob from former Man City playmaker Brahim Diaz, deftly lifting a touch over Marc Guehi and volleying in from point-blank range.
Vinicius looked set to put Madrid four to the good early in the second half, only to send a tame spot-kick straight at Donnarumma, who had brought down the Brazilian in the City box.
Some excellent last-ditch defending and smart goalkeeping from Courtois, who made up for an error from Thiago Pitarch – the youngest Spanish player to start for Madrid in a Champions League knockout match – kept City at bay, and Pep Guardiola's team must overturn a big deficit if they are to make the last eight.
Data Debrief: Valverde turns in an all-timer
Valverde is only the second player to score a first-half hat-trick against an English opponent in the Champions League. The other was Lionel Messi for Barcelona against Arsenal in April 2010.
His tally of goals on Wednesday also equalled the total of Champions League strikes he had managed across his previous 75 outings in the competition.
It was an awesome performance from the Uruguayan, who started out wide right. All three of his attempts went in, while he also led Madrid for chances created (two, level with Vinicius), dribbles (seven), dribbles completed (four), duels (17) and duels won (11).
City put the pressure on, but they created chances worth just 0.56 expected goals despite having almost 60% possession. Madrid were superb on the counter, with their 12 shots (seven of which were on target) worth a combined 2.59 xG.
