Real Madrid have reserved Zinedine Zidane's iconic No 5 shirt for their primary transfer target, Kylian Mbappe.
Real remain confident of landing Mbappe despite a second bid of €180million (£154m) for the forward being knocked back by Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
As a result, they are looking to hand the 22-year-old - who currently wears No 7 for PSG and No 10 for France - their iconic No 5 shirt upon his arrival in Spain.
Mbappe has always wanted to join Real Madrid and previously named Zidane as his childhood idol because he led France to World Cup glory.
Therefore, the opportunity to wear the club’s iconic No 5 will appeal to the French international - who missed a penalty against Switzerland at Euro 2020.
As it stands, the No 5 shirt currently belongs to Jesus Vallejo. However, AS have said the club's idea is to pass it on to the Paris Saint-Germain striker as Vallejo is unlikely to be a regular first-team starter this campaign.
The club are hoping to see Mbappe wearing Zidane's old shirt on on September 11 when Real Madrid return to the Santiago Bernabeu in front of a reduced 40,000 capacity.
Despite the pandemic wiping €300m (£257m) off revenue since the pandemic they say two frugal summers without a major signing have left them in a position to smash their transfer record for the French forward.
However, Real have had little success in getting a deal over the line with PSG after insulting the French side with a bid of €160m (£137m).
The club's Sporting Director Leonardo accused the 12 times European Cup holders of 'illegal and disrespectful behaviour'.
As a result, Real tabled another offer of €170m (£145m) plus €10m (£9m) in add-ons on Thursday but Al-Khelaifi responded: 'Our position is clear. We will not change it or repeat it.'
Therefore, the LaLiga giants increased their offer to €180m (£154m) for the Paris Saint-Germain forward.
They believe their new offer will be enough to get a deal over the line and secure Mbappe's services for the season.
