Robin van Persie could face hostile Arsenal reunion as he's lined up for new job

Robin van Persie could come up against former club Arsenal in the Champions League last-16 should he take the Feyenoord job after the Dutch side secured a famous victory over AC Milan in the play-offs.

The ex-striker is currently managing Eredivisie side Heerenveen, who are ninth in the table, but he could be in line for a switch to former employers Feyenoord after they sacked Brian Priske.

Feyenoord decided to axe Priske - the successor to Arne Slot after his departure to Liverpool - just days before their Champions League play-off second leg clash against Milan, with the team 14 points behind leaders Ajax in the table.

But incredibly, Feyenoord still pulled off victory over their Serie A counterparts following their 1-0 first leg lead. Former Feyenoord star Santiago Gimenez levelled the scores in the first minute before a late strike from Julian Carranza ensured the Dutch outfit would be playing in the last-16.

Feyenoord will now be awaiting their opponents in the next round, which will either be Arsenal or the winner of Juventus against PSV. Should they play Arsenal and Van Persie takes the job, it would hand him a hostile reunion after playing 278 times at the Emirates.

The club have made a double swoop for Van Persie and Erik ten Hag's former assistant Rene Hake, who are both represented by the same agency Sports Entertainment Group.

Van Persie has history with Feyenoord and is a fan favourite there, having started and finished his career at the club before coaching the Under-19s last season.

It's understood negotiations will soon take place between Feyenoord and Heerenveen to release Van Persie from his contract. Hake was recently seen at Feyenoord's famous 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in January - teasing that he may take up a role with the club.

Feyenoord coaches Etienne Reijnen and John de Wolf are expected to remain with the club as part of any new-look managerial setup.

While Van Persie is thought to be Feyenoord's top pick to become the next boss, Shakhtar coach Marino Pusic and Mark van Bommel have also been linked with the post.

Van Persie retired from football in 2019 after spells with Arsenal, Manchester United and Fenerbahce before making his first moves into coaching - starting as assistant manager to Dick Advocaat at Feyenoord in 2020 before taking the youth team job. He also spent time learning the ropes with Ten Hag's coaching staff at United.
