Roma 3-3 Juventus: Gatti scores last-gasp equalizer to see points shared

  /  R47

Federico Gatti’s dramatic stoppage-time equaliser ensured Juventus recovered from 3-1 down to secure a 3-3 draw away at AS Roma, keeping their UEFA Champions League (UCL) qualification hopes alive, despite extending a winless league run to four games (D2, L2).

Match Report

Federico Gatti came off the bench to rescue a point for Juventus as his 93rd-minute equaliser earned a 3-3 draw against top-four rivals Roma at Stadio Olimpico.

Juventus appeared set to fall seven points behind Roma in Serie A after going two goals down, but substitutes Jeremie Boga and Gatti sealed a share of the spoils late on.

Roma took the lead six minutes before half-time when Wesley cut inside from the left-hand side and bent a glorious effort past Mattia Perin and into the top-right corner.

However, Juventus responded with a stunner of their own in the 47th minute, with Francisco Conceicao flashing a first-time strike into the roof of the net from the edge of the box.

Roma restored their lead just seven minutes later, though, as a short corner routine ended with Lorenzo Pellegrini's cross being volleyed in by an unmarked Evan Ndicka.

The in-form Donyell Malen then got in on the act with a dinked 65th-minute finish, but Boga halved the deficit after Zeki Celik failed to deal with a cross.

And just five minutes after coming on, Gatti smashed in the leveller from close range as he reacted quickest to Edon Zhegrova's free-kick, which had caused confusion in the Roma box.

Data Debrief: Gatti's late show undoes Malen's magic

There was heightened importance to this match given the context of the race for Champions League football this season, and though both teams came away with a point, it was certainly a spectacle for the neutral.

Indeed, it is only the fourth time that at least six goals have been scored in total in matches between Roma and Juventus in Serie A at the Olimpico, after 3-4 in January 2022, 3-3 in January 1962 and 1-5 in November 1946.

Gatti's late intervention overshadowed Malen's sixth goal since joining Roma from Aston Villa. Since his Serie A debut on January 18, only Bayern Munich's Harry Kane (nine) has netted more times than the Dutchman in the top five European leagues.

And Roma may feel they had done enough to seal all three points, having registered an expected goals (xG) total of 1.65 from their 11 attempts to Juventus' 1.39 from their 13 shots in the contest, but their defensive fragility came back to bite them.
