According to Mundo Deportivo, the Romanian Football Federation this week approved an innovative measure for youth football matches involving players aged 7 to 16: the "black card." It is not aimed at players or coaches, but directly at spectators whose behavior on the sidelines is inappropriate. If adults repeatedly cross the line, the referee will directly end the match.
The federation had already strengthened penalties for such behavior in 2024, with fines ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 euros and a potential three-year ban from attending matches. Now they have taken this further by introducing the black card rule.
The black card's procedure is straightforward. The referee will not immediately show the card. They will first stop the match and ask the coaches to relay a warning to their supporters. If the inappropriate behavior persists, there is a second stage: the match is suspended for ten minutes, and everyone returns to the dressing rooms. If the situation still does not improve, the referee will show the black card, declaring the match terminated with no possibility of resumption.
The Romanian Football Federation's position is clear: children should not suffer for adults' ambitions, frustrations, or heated emotions. Currently, Romania is the first football federation to introduce a special card specifically designed to penalize spectator misconduct. This measure is striking and sends a clear message: in youth football, the focus should be on the children. If adults lose sight of this, the black card could be shown at any time.
