Rooney sports black eye in press conference after clash of heads

Wayne Rooney wore a baseball cap as he spoke to the media on Tuesday but was unable to hide his huge black eye.

The DC United star needed five stitches after cutting his left eyebrow and breaking his nose in last weekend's 2-1 win over Colorado.

But Rooney was adamant that his injuries will not prevent him from missing United's next game — against Montreal Impact on Saturday.

'It looks a bit worse with the black eye but it feels fine,' he told US media after taking part in training on Tuesday.

'There's not much swelling. I've had no problems sleeping. I'll play as normal. Of course, if I get a bang on it, it will be painful.'

Rooney sustained his injuries in stoppage time against Colorado when he clashed heads with Axel Sjoberg while trying to defend his side's 18-yard box.

But he was quick to make it clear that he did not blame Sjoberg.

He added: 'It was a complete accident. These things happen. It's part of football. I'm used to it.

'It will be fine. It's actually settled down quite quick.'

Rooney scored the first goal of his MLS career before his injuries took the shine off his achievement.

He opened the scoring in the 33rd minute after running onto a pass from Luciano Acosta and slipping the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Tim Howard - another former Everton and Manchester United man.
