Ruben Amorim has said he understands the transfer speculation surrrounding Bruno Fernandes but wants to keep the Portugal star at Old Trafford. Speculation has mounted on the Manchester United talisman following a difficult season for the club.
Reports have emerged of interest from the Saudi Pro League, but Amorim was clear in wanting to retain the services of his captain. Al-Hilal are said to be ready to lodge a significant offer for United's top goalscorer.
Fernandes, 30, has recorded 19 goals and 18 assists this season despite the Red Devils dwelling near the bottom of the Premier League and played a key role in the club reaching the Europa League semi-final. The midfielder saw speculation over his position at the club last summer but eventually signed a contract until 2027, with an option for a further year, in August.
And Amorim would loathe to lose a key player as he attempts to transform United's fortune. The United head coach has already rejected the possibility of his star player exiting for Real Madrid at the end of the season, and was again reaffirmed his commitment to keeping Fernandes at the club on Wednesday.
"I think it is easy to understand that [transfer speculation], not just because of the numbers but the way he plays," said Amorim in his press conference ahead of Athletic Bilbao.
"He is a top player and we need to top players. He is a leader, the captain.
"It is natural that people want Bruno, but we want to keep him. He is one of the top players of the world."
Earlier in his Manchester United tenure, Amorim claimed his side were the worst in the club's history. The 40-year-old boss was asked about those comments with the club now on the verge of the Europa League final.
"I think you have to see the quotes in the moment, so things can change. If you look to the Premier League, since I arrive, we are the worst team since I arrived.
"At the end of this season, we can be the worst team in Premier League history with a European title. This season has been really disappointing for everyone, but nothing is going to change. In that moment, sometimes I have to think a little bit more."
Alejandro Garnacho also faced the media and had little issue with his manager's comments. The young winger is simply focused on earning a spot in the Champions League.
"We know that we are not doing a great job in the Premier League. But the manager said before that we have followed the rules and tomorrow is a final, and we will face it like it is 0-0.
"If we win the Europa League, we will be in the Champions League and we will face next season with a different mentality and in a different way."
