The Manchester United head coach admitted that the current team “may be the worst in history” after another defeat against Brighton.
It is fair to say that all has not gone to plan in the first few months of Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United. Despite a high-profile victory over Manchester City, Amorim has now lost seven of his first 15 games in charge.
That record is worse than that of his predecessor, Eric ten Hag, in the 15 games before he was dismissed. Amorim has not shielded his players from criticism after last weekend’s home loss to Brighton & Hove Albion and he reportedly exercised some frustrations immediately after the defeat.
The Athletic reports that Amorim tore into players in the locker room after the game, damaging one of the wall-mounted televisions in the process. The screen is used for tactical instructions before games and will need to be repaired before United face Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday.
What did Ruben Amorim say about his Man Utd team?
For much of his time in the role Amorim has tried to be a calming presence with Manchester United. He boasts an ease in front of the press that always eluded Ten Hag and he is a clearer communicator in public.
He has repeatedly insisted that it will take time for his ideas to bare results but the struggles against Southampton and Brighton in recent games appear to have stoked a more terse response from the head coach. Speaking after the Brighton game Amorim called on his players to do more, describing this iteration of Manchester United as “maybe the worst in history”.
“I knew that it was going to be hard to put a completely new idea in the moment but when you lose games and don’t win three games in a row it becomes really hard,” Amorim continued. “So that’s why I’m telling we are going to suffer because I will continue to do the same.
“To help my players is to give them the tools to play in this way but then without training is really hard. You can feel it in the end of the game, everybody was changing position and that is something I will not see again. We can lose but we have to maintain position.”
