Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has criticised Mohamed Salah's performance in the Reds' 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven
Liverpool Champions League winner Dietmar Hamann has criticised Mohamed Salah's display against PSV Eindhoven - whilst sharing his thoughts on Arne Slot's future at the club. The Reds suffered a 4-1 defeat at Anfield in their league phase encounter on Wednesday evening.
Dominik Szoboszlai netted Liverpool's only strike, which had brought the hosts level before the Reds shipped three second-half goals to endure another crushing loss.
The defeat to PSV means Liverpool have lost by a three-goal margin in each of their previous three fixtures, letting in 10 goals during that spell.
Hamann offered his verdict on Liverpool's poor run of results, with the former midfielder explaining why he anticipated Slot would make more changes to his side, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Alexander Isak was dropped to the substitutes' bench with Hugo Ekitike leading the attack for Liverpool. Isak was introduced to the contest in the second half when Ekitike suffered an injury.
Slot's only other change saw Giorgi Mamardashvili replace Alisson Becker, who was absent due to illness.
Hamann outlined why he believes Salah should have been benched for the clash with PSV, whilst also casting doubt over Slot's prospects in the Anfield hot seat.
"I thought Salah might be one of the first one to be dropped," Hamann told RTE Sport.
"And then I said to myself, 'I'm not sure because he needs him'.
"Now he [Slot] has got a decision to make. Do you get the sack with Salah or do you keep your job without him?".
"What Salah did for that second PSV goal, that was the time Slot had the chance to take him off straight away because what he did there was disgraceful.
"For a player of Salah's calibre it pains me to say that because he is the guy that has been carrying the team for the last seven or eight years.
"But what he did in letting the player, Mauro Junior, get past him, without doing anything to help the team."
Liverpool's next match sees them travel to face West Ham in the Premier League at the weekend. Slot's position as the club's head coach has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks, and it remains to be seen if Salah will still be in the team for the trip to the London Stadium on Sunday.
