Manchester United are expected to pay roughly a third of Jadon Sancho's £290,000 wage while he plays for Borussia Dortmund.
It's understood that United are on the verge of agreeing a deal to loan Sancho, 23, back to Dortmund until the end of this season. The Red Devils stumped up £73million to sign him in July 2021 after more than a year spent pursuing the English winger, whose time at Old Trafford has been nothing short of a major disappointment.
Sancho's quiet first two seasons were followed by a falling out with manager Erik ten Hag which became public in early September after the United manager criticised the 23-time England international for not training well enough ahead of their dramatic 3-1 defeat away to Arsenal. That prompted a response from Sancho on social media, as he fired back at his boss over the "untrue" claims and suggested he was being made a 'scapegoat'.
Since then, he hasn't made a single appearance for the Red Devils, with Ten Hag telling Sancho that he must apologise publicly before returning. The 23-year-old has stood firm and continues to train separately from the first-team squad, not even using the same dressing room or canteen, but now he's set for a long-awaited change of scenery.
Various reports state that German giants Dortmund are now close to re-signing Sancho, having first brought him to the club from United's rivals, Manchester City, in August 2017. The Daily Mail add that the Bundesliga heavyweights will contribute two-thirds of his salary, leaving the Red Devils with a hefty bill worth nearly £100,000, despite him not even playing for them.
This is due to Dortmund, who won't have the automatic option to sign Sancho permanently this summer, insisting that United cover a third of his wages. Additional payments are built into the loan deal based on his appearances and if Edin Terzic's side qualifies for the Champions League.
Sancho enjoyed a tremendous first spell with Dortmund which lasted three years. Across 137 first-team appearances, he registered 50 goals and 64 assists. Ex-Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was desperate to sign the right-footed playmaker and got his wish two-and-a-half years ago, as Sancho joined in the same summer as Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Fans were excited to see what Sancho could do in the Premier League, but his time at Old Trafford has been forgettable. Sancho has also lost his place in the England squad since joining United after featuring for Gareth Southgate's Three Lions during their run to the European Championship final in 2021, in which he missed a penalty during the shoot-out against eventual winners Italy.
