Sergio Ramos’s rough Rayados ride

  /  autty

It was a rough week for Sergio Ramos in the Apertura 2025. The veteran center-back made costly mistakes on the pitch - and off it, he didn’t hold back in criticizing Liga MX officiating.

Ramos’ errors cost Rayados crucial points

Rayados’ busy week kicked off with a high-profile clash against Club América on Matchday 9. As usual, Ramos started in central defense, and Monterrey dominated the first half, taking a 2-0 lead. But América showed resilience and clawed their way back to level the score.

Ramos was directly involved in the equalizer. Late in the game, América capitalized on a set piece - an area where Ramos typically excels. But this time, he lost the aerial duel. Ramón Juárez outjumped him and buried a header to tie the match. Ramos was left exposed and clearly at fault.

Midweek, Monterrey traveled to Toluca for one of Matchday 11’s most entertaining fixtures. Rayados struck first and had a golden opportunity to double their lead before the 20-minute mark. That chance fell to Ramos, who stepped up to take a penalty. Opting for a cheeky Panenka, he was denied by goalkeeper Hugo González, who held his ground and made the save - likely with some insight from head coach Antonio Mohamed.

Ramos blasts Liga MX referees

Monterrey wrapped up the week against Mazatlán. While the team came away with the win, Ramos once again found himself in the spotlight.

The Spanish defender had two goals disallowed, sparking his frustration. He took to social media to vent his anger at the officiating. On Instagram, Ramos wrote:“What a ridiculous foul call. Then I get tackled in the box on corners and they say it’s just part of the game… LOL. The foul he called today? A joke!! This only happens in this league!! Anyway, we move on. They took two goals from us today.”

What’s next for Ramos and Rayados?

Ramos now has a full week to regroup and move past a turbulent stretch. Monterrey will use the time to prepare for their upcoming visit to Tijuana, which will close out Matchday 12 on Sunday, October 5.
