Over a month on from the horse-riding accident in Andalusia that left him with serious head injuries, Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico is now out of intensive care.

His wife, Alba Silva, had indicated last week that he had recovered parts of his memory and the ability to communicate. He will have been in a coma for 19 days in total. According to The Athletic yesterday, Rico could leave the Virgen del Rocío hospital in Seville as early as in two weeks’ time, and has found his voice again.

This afternoon, the Spaniard has given a public statement for the first time since the accident, which took place shortly after PSG clinched the Ligue 1 title in Strasbourg, and the squad had been given a rest the following day.

Taking to his Instagram account, the 29-year-old expressed his appreciation for the support he had received in the wake of the accident, and provided reassuring news on his condition:

“I’m still working on my recovery, which is improving day by day. I feel very lucky – once more, thanks to all and I hope to see you soon.”
