David Silva confirmed his decision to leave Manchester City next summer at the launch of a campaign in his native Gran Canaria against gender violence.
It follows an incident two years ago when Yurena Lopez, a chambermaid at the Anfi resort for whom Silva is a spokesman, was killed by her partner.
Silva's mother Eva worked in the same job at the resort when he was growing up on the island, and the Spanish star was happy to front the 'Stop Violence' campaign that launched on Tuesday.
'It's very simple,' said Silva. 'We've all got family. We've all got mothers, sisters, daughters, so for a campaign like this I will always be supportive because it is about protecting women.
'Thankfully I have never been in a situation where a woman has suffered physical violence,' he added, referring to the Yurena Lopez case.
'But even if my mother had never worked here, this is something that should never have happened. Things like this should never happen. Ever.
'She was only 23, always singing, a very good friend of everybody and it's not fair that things like this can happen. It was really shocking.'
Silva was joined at the event by British actor Will Mellor, Norwegian rally driver Mads Ostberg and world windsurfing champion Daida Ruano.
He revealed that he will end a 10-year career at City next summer when his current contract at the Etihad runs out.
'This is the last one,' said Silva. 'Ten years for me is enough. It's the perfect time. Initially the club were talking about two years (contract) but I decided to sign another one so I finished at 10 years.
'It completes the cycle. It's a nice round figure. I can never see myself playing against City for another team. So 10 years - that's it!'
