Slot is relishing the 'big responsibility' of giving Reds fans a proper party

Arne Slot says he feels a responsibility to give Liverpool fans a day to remember on Sunday after their last league title was wrapped up behind closed doors amid the Covid pandemic.

The Reds are now within touching distance of the Premier League title and will confirm their status as champions with a point against Tottenham on Sunday.

Boss Slot knows there is a lot of anticipation ahead of the occasion on Sunday with tickets for the match like gold dust. But the Dutchman says he can shoulder the weight of expectation and give supporters a moment to cherish for ever.

‘It is a big responsibility because we are aware of the fact the last time this club won the league it was Covid so everyone is looking forward to Sunday,’ he said. ‘But we are aware there is a job still to be done and that is (to win) one point.

‘We are aware and our fans are aware we still need a point, we are definitely still aware within this building.’

Slot, his staff and the players gathered on Wednesday to watch Arsenal versus Crystal Palace – a Gunners defeat would have confirmed the title for Liverpool.

But though the manager knows there is a huge sense of occasion around this weekend, he insists that he does not dream about lifting the trophy or partying to celebrate a momentous triumph.

Asked if he allows himself to think about what could await, he said: ‘No. I get these questions and then it comes to your mind, of course. But that's the last thing you think about as a manager at this point of time.

‘The only thing I think about is that hopefully all the players are available and to prepare them. I know how hard it was to win against a team that was close to relegation (Leicester, last weekend). It was hard to get the win over the line.

‘I am not getting carried away at all. We've faced Tottenham already three times, I know how hard it is to beat them for us. That is where my main focus is on.’
