According to Mundo Deportivo, Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente will be awarded an honorary doctorate by UCAM (Catholic University of Murcia). He led the team to win the 2024 European Championship and the 2022/2023 UEFA Nations League.
The award ceremony will take place on Thursday, October 15, at the opening ceremony of UCAM's new academic year. The university previously bestowed the same honor upon Vicente del Bosque, the coach who led Spain to World Cup and European Championship victories.
María Dolores García Mascarell, President of UCAM, stated: "It is essential to recognize and highlight those who truly serve as role models for society, honored not only for their admirable achievements but also for the inspiring values they embody." De la Fuente, 65, will visit the Monastery of Los Jerónimos Church, where UCAM's main campus is located. The university will also celebrate its 30th anniversary this academic year.
García Mascarell made this announcement at the Cathedral of Murcia. At the time, UCAM CF, competing in Group 3 of the Segunda Federación, was offering flowers to the patron saint of Murcia, Our Lady of Fuensanta, with the goal of being promoted to the Primera Federación.
García Mascarell also stated: "Luis de la Fuente embodies UCAM's founding values: tireless effort, managerial talent, respect for others, and teamwork as the path to success."
She added: "More importantly, his openness and courage in expressing his faith have also deeply moved us. We live in a time when one seems to have to hide one's beliefs, but Luis de la Fuente has given us a very precious testimony."
She also quoted De la Fuente: "I have faith; I pray every day and thank God. This is not superstition; it is faith, something personal that can also be shared with others."
De la Fuente will join UCAM's list of honorary doctorate recipients. In the sports world, del Bosque and former International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach have also received this honor.
