Spurs the victims of latest VAR farce as Aurier has goal ruled out

VAR was at the centre of more controversy once again on Saturday when Serge Aurier's goal for Tottenham was ruled out for a contentious offside decision.

Mauricio Pochettino's side thought they doubled their lead against Leicester after Aurier's low, hard effort beat Kasper Schmeichel in goal.

As the Spurs players celebrated and made their way back to the centre circle, the mandatory checks were made by the video assistant referees in Stockley Park, west London.

As fans from both sides waited with baited breath, the goal was ruled out after replays showed that Son Heung-min was adjudged to have been in an offside position moments before the goal, with the images showing there to be just millimetres in the call.

Just minutes later, Spurs had the lead wiped out as Ricardo Pereira equalised for the Foxes, making the game all level again.

While Son was in an offside position by the letter of the law, fans flocked to social media to criticise the decision to disallow Aurier's goal.

One fan tweeted: This is getting ridiculous. VAR ruling Aurier goal offside. What happened to playing the advantage. Offside by what? A micrometer!'

Another added: 'The point of introducing the offside rule was because it prevented players from “goal-hanging”. Some of the decisions with VAR have been overscrupulous and, quite frankly, pedantic. VAR is not the problem; the interpretation has changed. Aurier's goal should have stood.'

Other fans deemed the outcome 'ridiculous' before one claimed VAR is 'ruining football'.

Tottenham went on to lose the game after James Maddison's superb long-range effort won it late on at the King Power Stadium.
