Steven Gerrard: Estêvão is thrilling to watch; I love his eagerness to shoot

Steven Gerrard praised Estêvão's performance after Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

Gerrard raved about Chelsea winger Estêvão, believing the player will soon give Xabi Alonso a selection headache.

Estêvão made his first Premier League start of the season on Saturday afternoon, and the winger was outstanding in Chelsea's 2-0 win over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. The 19-year-old kept the visitors' defense on their toes for the 87 minutes he was on the pitch, with his only regret being that he couldn't score, especially after having two goals disallowed.

The Brazilian took six shots during the match, equaling the most by a Chelsea player in a single game this season. Alonso was delighted with Estêvão's display in SW6, seeing it as the "best response" after a slow start to the season.

Gerrard, like his former Liverpool teammate Alonso, believes Estêvão's quality will give the Chelsea manager plenty to think about in the coming weeks. Once João Pedro returns from his thigh injury, it will be much harder for Alonso to fit Estêvão into the attack, with Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers also competing for places.

Speaking about Estêvão and his performance against Manchester United on "Overlap Daily," Gerrard said: "He's very exciting, a joy to watch. He's a typical Brazilian player, all flair and skill, but I really like how direct he is. I love his eagerness to shoot.

"If I were to criticize some of Liverpool's attacking players, I'd say they don't shoot enough. Many times they always want to make one more pass, or look for a bit more perfection. What I like about Estêvão is that moment when he cut in from the left, played a quick one-two and shot straight away, and the Manchester United goalkeeper made a brilliant save.

"But I like his desire to shoot. There was another chance in the first half where he could have slowed down a bit and looked to lay the ball off to the edge of the box, but he wanted to drive forward and try to score.

"So he's very eager to impress the manager. When João Pedro comes back, he'll cause Xabi a problem, because Pedro Neto is also a very good player, but you can't fit five players into a front four, so it will be interesting.

"But based on his individual performance in this match, Estêvão certainly did his case no harm."

For the first two months of the season, there was plenty of speculation about Estêvão's future. Before Saturday's match, the teenager had not started a league game this season and had played fewer than 50 minutes.

However, Alonso has been consistent when speaking about Estêvão, saying the season is long and the Brazil international will eventually get his chance to prove himself. Estêvão took his opportunity this weekend, and he will be hoping to keep his place in the starting eleven when Chelsea travel to Sunderland later this week.

João Pedro is expected to miss the match at the Stadium of Light as he continues to recover from a thigh injury. Meanwhile, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers appear to be the first names on Alonso's team sheet, as both have started every league game so far this season.

Pedro Neto is also ahead of Estêvão in the pecking order. The Portugal international has started every league match except for the opening Premier League fixture against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
