Steven Gerrard 'is among the candidates to become new Olympiacos manager'

Steven Gerrard could be braced for a shock return to management with Greek side Olympiacos reportedly considering him for a potential move.

Gerrard has been working as a pundit since being sacked by Aston Villa after a dreadful start to the season that left the club heading towards the relegation zone.

They reacted by appointing former Arsenal manager Unai Emery who has since led them to within six points of the English top-flight's Champions League qualification spots.

Liverpool legend Gerrard is now being considered by Olympiacos and is being viewed as an alternative to Gennaro Gattuso if the Italian doesn't take the role, as reported by Greece's sport-fm.

Gattuso was previously in charge of LaLiga side Valencia but left his position at the Spanish strugglers after just seven months in charge, despite signing a two-year deal.

The Italian who is represented by super agent would apparently like to take his time to evaluate the position on offer as he looks to take charge of a Greek club for the first time in his managerial career.

Olympiacos reportedly consider Gattuso as their first-choice but won't hold out for an indefinite period of time and are looking at alternative options as well.

Gerrard is said to be among those names but it is not clear whether he would be interested in uprooting and moving across Europe.

The 42-year-old previously led Rangers to a Scottish Premiership crown and recently revealed that he had rejected 'exciting opportunities' at various clubs and national teams.

He was also quoted as favourite to become Poland's national team manager before they decided to appoint ex-Portugal boss Fernando Santos.

Other past Premier League managers have also had their names mentioned as Olympiacos look for a new leader and reports suggest Jesse Marsch and Bruno Lage are being monitored.

Marsch previously of Leeds is rumoured to prefer to remain managing in the Premier League and was linked with a midseason takeover at Southampton, while Lage has been a free agent since he had his position at Wolves revoked in October.

It is no surprise to see Olympiacos targeting Premier League names given that their owner Evangelos Marinakis is also the controlling party of Nottingham Forest as well.

While he has rattled through managers at the Greek side, he has instead shown solidarity with Steve Cooper in the club's relegation dogfight.

Forest slipped into the Premier League's relegation zone after they suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Erik ten Hag's Manchester United on Sunday.
