Quotidiano Sportivo says Sunderland offered €30m to Bologna for Lucumi, but a deal couldn't be struck before the market shut.
Lucumi's contract with Bologna runs to 2027, with his agent Simone Rondanini in talks about a new extension.
However, negotiations have been ongoing since the end of last season, with no agreement close to being found. As such, the situation has encouraged Sunderland to make a fresh move for Lucumi in January.
