According to Greg Evans of The Athletic, Liverpool are in advanced talks with 19-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni over a contract extension, and an agreement is expected soon. The club wants to reward the youngster's recent impressive performances with a new deal and include him in its long-term plans.
Nyoni has been in talks with Liverpool over his future for several months, and although positive progress has been made, a new contract has not yet been formally finalized. Last summer, Nottingham Forest made a £30 million offer for Nyoni, but Liverpool rejected it. Then-manager Arne Slot made it clear that Nyoni was an important part of the team's future plans.
This season, Nyoni has made 11 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions, and he made his first Premier League start last Sunday against Arsenal. His performance as a defensive midfielder deeply impressed the coaching staff. He has now been included in Liverpool's squad for Wednesday's Champions League away match against Fenerbahçe. With Gravenberch injured and Szoboszlai still gradually returning to his best form, Nyoni is expected to get more playing time.
Andoni Iraola commented on Nyoni before the match: "Trey is in very good form right now. He just needs to keep up the performances he has shown since preseason and be ready for every game. We trust him, and he is doing very well. We must encourage him to keep learning, improving and gaining experience."
Nyoni signed a multi-year contract extension with Liverpool in June 2025, when he turned 18, though the exact length was not disclosed. It is understood that he still has more than three and a half years left on his current deal. Even so, Liverpool hope to extend it further to keep hold of one of the club's most highly rated young players, alongside Rio Ngumoha.
The Athletic notes that Nyoni's recent progress gives Liverpool strong reason to push for an extension. The club has already completed contract renewals for Szoboszlai and Gravenberch and is currently negotiating a new deal with Ngumoha. Liverpool believe Nyoni has proven his ability early this season, and the next step is for him to maintain consistent performances while getting more opportunities.
