Teddy Sheringham recalls huge row with Roy Keane at Man United and admits they didn't speak again

Teddy Sheringham has lifted the lid on an extraordinary row he had with Roy Keane at Manchester United which led to them never speaking.

The pair played together during Sheringham's four-year spell at Old Trafford, while they were also team-mates earlier in their careers at Nottingham Forest.

Both players were large personalities in the dressing room. Sheringham also famously fell out with strike partner Andy Cole and Keane's United career ended after a bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson.

So perhaps it is no surprise that the two did not quite get on. In an interview with The Times, Sheringham recalled a remarkable exchange during a bus journey back from a night out with the United squad in 1998.

'All of a sudden, Keany said, "Why don't you f*** off back to London in your f***ing red Ferrari and your penthouse?"' Sheringham said. 'I went "Eh?" And he says, "Yeah, f*** off back to London".

'I'm like, "Are you coming for me, Keany? Why are you coming for me, you Paddy? F***ing what?" And he went "f*** off", and he goes on "f***ing red Ferrari, penthouse...".

'Then he jumped round, still with his bad leg, got me by the tie, pulled me towards him, grappling with him. Suddenly everyone's going "what's going on?" and pulling us apart.'

While United's others players managed to pull the pair apart, former England striker Sheringham says he thought that the dispute might reignite the following day.

'I couldn't sleep that night thinking, "It’s going to go off as soon as I get into training",' he told The Times. 'I've seen Roy in the gym so I know it can go off. So I go in thinking, "Get yourself ready". I actually go in to change thinking, "I'm ready for him".

'You have your own cubicle so I was either next to Keany, or maybe the one after, and as I walked in, he's there doing his shoes up. I walked in past him and I'm thinking he's going to get up and boot me in the face. I'm thinking "here we go".'

Instead, the Irishman decided to give his team-mate the silent treatment.

'Keany gets up and walks out,' Sheringham said. 'He didn't say a word to me. He didn't say a word to me for the next three-and-a-half years.'

Despite the pair's feud, United continued to be hugely successful in that period. They won the treble in 1999 and two more Premier League titles before Sheringham joined Tottenham in 2001.

Keane wrote about Sheringham, and his choice of car, in his 2002 autobiography.

'Teddy arrived for training on his first day at the club in his red Ferrari, every inch the confident Londoner,' the former midfielder said. 'The chemistry between us was never right.'

Sheringham does not appear to have held a grudge though, as he told TalkSPORT in 2019 that Keane was one of the two best players that he ever played alongside.
