The tragic incident occurred late in Tenerife's home fixture against Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López. With the score level at 2-2, De Miguel was chasing a long ball in an attempt to launch a counterattack when Andorra goalkeeper Owono rushed out of his area to intercept it.

Owono advanced towards the centre of the pitch and collided heavily with De Miguel, with his knee appearing to strike the Tenerife forward in the upper body and head area. De Miguel immediately collapsed and remained motionless on the pitch.

Medical staff rushed to his aid, while players from both teams desperately called for assistance. The striker received treatment on the field for several minutes before being carried off on a stretcher and taken to hospital by ambulance.

The referee sent Owono off following the incident. The match was subsequently abandoned in the 108th minute, with the score still 2-2, as medical personnel attended to the injured player.

According to Spanish media reports, De Miguel suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest during the ambulance journey and was successfully resuscitated by medical staff. He was admitted to the intensive care unit at the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where he initially remained in a critical but stable condition.

However, his condition deteriorated. In the early hours of Tuesday, Tenerife announced that the striker had suffered a neurological deterioration. Just hours later, the club confirmed the heartbreaking news of his death at 8:00 am.
