The Sun: England players may use Viagra to combat altitude sickness

According to The Sun, England players can legally use Viagra during the FIFA World Cup to help combat altitude sickness in Mexico City.

Anti-doping rules allow England players to use Viagra during the FIFA World Cup to address altitude-related issues. The prescription drug is not on the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) 2026 prohibited list. Studies show that Viagra can reduce fatigue and dizziness at high altitudes by lowering blood pressure in the lungs.

There is no evidence that England players actually intend to take Viagra—a drug best known for treating erectile dysfunction—during their upcoming trip to Mexico City. However, head coach Tuchel is already exploring ways to help his players cope with the challenging conditions.

The Estadio Azteca, where England will play Mexico in the Round of 16, stands more than 2,200 meters above sea level. At this altitude, the ball travels farther, and players find it more difficult to run on the field. Mexican players are already accustomed to the high-altitude conditions, having lost only twice at the Estadio Azteca in the past 56 years.

England will fly to Mexico City on Friday, leaving just two days to acclimatize. The Three Lions returned to their training base in Kansas City after defeating DR Congo in Atlanta on Wednesday, with Tuchel hoping to fine-tune his tactics at a neutral venue.

How Viagra affects exercise at high altitudes: Viagra dilates blood vessels in the lungs, lowering blood pressure and making it easier for oxygen to circulate throughout the body. This is especially important at high altitudes, where there is less oxygen in the air. Dilated pulmonary blood vessels can help counteract the dizziness and fatigue commonly experienced during exercise at high altitudes. However, studies show that below 4,000 meters, Viagra may have little effect on oxygen delivery. WADA believes that at or near sea level, the substance is not a significant performance enhancer.

Additionally, the location of England's hotel in Mexico City is being kept strictly confidential to prevent home fans from disturbing the players' sleep. FIFA has even approved roadblocks around the hotel after Ecuadoran players were unable to rest due to noise disturbances and ultimately lost to Mexico in the Round of 32.

Competition in the FIFA World Cup knockout stages is fierce. England believe that football is "coming home" after a 60-year wait, with Harry Kane in top form. But France, Spain, Brazil, and Argentina are all among the favorites to win the title. Germany and the Netherlands, two strong teams, have already been eliminated on penalties in the Round of 32.
