The seven differences between Solari and Lopetegui

Julen Lopetegui's departure has brought Santiago Hernan Solari to the Real Madrid bench and the team will be asked to adapt to the ideas of their new boss.

The Argentine is eager to deliver several changes in players, staff, style and mentality, highlighting the main differences to his predecessor on the bench.

The comeback of Antonio Pintus

One of the first decisions of Solari was to name Antonio Pintus as the fitness coach; move that was celebrated by the players.

Pintus arrived at Real Madrid after Zinedine Zidane's recommendation in 2016, as they had coincided in Juventus in the last season of the Frenchman.

Julen Lopetegui, however, had his own team and Pintus was second in the line, although Oscar Caro never had the same connection with the squad.

Vinicius's new stage

According to Lopetegui the 45 million euro signing, needed time to adapt to Spanish football and a team of the calibre of Real Madrid.

The Brazilian was sent to the second team and only played 13 minutes with the seniors, although he thrived with four goals in five games at Real Madrid Castilla.

"Vini is one more player, he's a young and very talented guy, there are no players in the first-team squad who do not have talent," said Solari prior to Wednesday's Copa del Rey game.

Courtois undisputed starter

Although Keylor Navas will start against UD Melilla, Solari is adamant that Thibaut Courtois is his number one choice for between the goalposts.

The debate about the first goalkeeper was a terrible headache for the former Spain tactician, as Navas was vital in Real Madrid's last seasons and the Belgian was their star signing last summer.

As a result, the Costa Rican would feature in the Champions League and the former Chelsea shot-stopper in LaLiga Santander.

From now on however, Navas will only play the cup games, while his teammate will feature in both the European and domestic league.

Lack of experience

Solari hung up his football boots in 2011 and seven years later he sits on the bench of the most successful club in the world.

He has only coached in Real Madrid's academy starting from the Cadete B, to move to Cadete A, Juvenil B, Juvenil A and since 2016 Real Madrid Castilla.

Lopetegui had coached Porto and La Roja, although he had also worked for Rayo Vallecano, Real Madrid Castilla and in the lower ranks of the Spanish national team.

Despite the example of Zidane, his lack of experience might prove critical as the season unfolds.

Different styles

Solari's quote in his first press conference as coach Real Madrid was a statement of intent.

"The idea is to go to Melilla and play with two balls," he said.

Under Lopetegui the team has been accused of a lack of character in some games and his successor wants his team to command the ball, but also to play with passion; an idea Los Blancos fans would be fond of.

Dressing room management

Sergio Ramos launched a warning minutes after the tough defeat to Barcelona.

"Dressing room management is more important than the knowledge of a coach," he explained, making clear the skill Lopetegui's replacement needs.

The Argentine's advantage is that he coexisted with superstars such as Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Ronaldo or David Beckham.

He knows exactly how they are, how they feel and how players of those characteristics think, while he was under Vicente del Bosque's tutelage.

"I admire del Bosque and respect him very much for his ability to manage the human group, which in professional football is as important as the design of training," he told Grafico in 2016.

Way to transmit the ideas

The Argentine's messages are more clear and direct, appealing to the emotional side of the players' personalities.

Julen Lopetegui, however, was accused of failing to correctly transmit his message, not only in the press room before the media, but also when he addressed his players.
