The unknowns of Barça's numbers

  /  William008

The '10' left vacant by Ansu Fati goes to Lamine Yamal but the '12', the '14' released by Pablo Torre and the 22 are still unassigned.

There is one extra center back, Araujo's number 4 or Christensen's number 15, and it remains to be seen what will happen with transfers and how the overbooking of goalkeepers will be resolved.

Barça will begin preseason training today with an afternoon session, but it remains to be seen what Hansi Flick 's squad will look like: whether there will be more reinforcements or just Joan Garcia's. One of the biggest unknowns heading into the season is the players' shirt numbers.

As of today, and with the players we have, the numbers '10', due to the departure of Ansu Fati , '12', '14' due to the departure of Pablo Torre , and '22' are unassigned, waiting to see what happens with the transfers and any other signings that may come to the team.

What's clear is that Lamine Yamal will keep the number '10'. It's the new standard-bearer for Barcelona fans. In addition, young players like Héctor Fort and Gerard Martín will also have to wear one in their second year with the first team. The number '12' that Joao Félix once wore is now unsigned, as is the number '22'.

The allocation of goalkeepers is the issue that will cause the most controversy. Ter Stegen has had the number 1 spot until now, although the arrival of Joan Garcia could leave him without it. Iñaki Peña 's number 13 could go either to Ter Stegen if he stays, or to Szczesny , depending on superstitions. The Alicante native has assumed he won't continue.

Whether or not there will be more departures remains to be seen. There's one center-back left over. He's between Christensen and Araujo , between the number 15 and the number 4, and it's not clear whether Pau Víctor, wearing the number 18, will continue. Oriol Romeu is returning from a loan but won't be staying.
