Third-Place Scenarios: Three spots remain; Iran & South Korea need Uzbekistan, Ghana favors Scotland

  /  autty

Only three spots from the final matchday of the FIFA World Cup group stage remain up for grabs. Currently, Sweden, Ecuador, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Paraguay, and Senegal have secured qualification as the best third-placed teams.

Three spots are left to be contested by six teams, with Uruguay from Group H already eliminated on 2 points.

The third-placed teams currently in contention are Scotland (3 points/-3 goal difference), South Korea (3 points/-1 goal difference), and Iran (3 points/0 goal difference).

Their qualification chances decrease in order: Scotland faces the most difficult path, South Korea has a moderate chance, and Iran has the best odds among the three.

Scotland's qualification conditions (all three must be met):

① Austria and Algeria must produce a winner. If Austria wins, they need a 2-goal margin. If Algeria wins, they need a 4-goal margin.

② DR Congo either fails to defeat Uzbekistan or loses by fewer than 4 goals.

③ Ghana defeats Croatia.

South Korea's qualification conditions (two of three must be met):

① Austria and Algeria must produce a winner. If Algeria wins, they need a 2-goal margin.

② DR Congo either fails to defeat Uzbekistan or loses by fewer than 6 goals.

③ Ghana defeats Croatia.

Iran's qualification conditions (one of three must be met):

① Austria and Algeria must produce a winner.

② DR Congo either fails to defeat Uzbekistan or loses by fewer than 8 goals.

③ Ghana defeats Croatia.

However, Austria and Algeria can both advance with a draw. Therefore, all three teams are banking on Uzbekistan and Ghana to deliver the upsets they need.
