After just six months in Rosario, veteran Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas is leaving Newell’s Old Boys and is set to become the newest signing for Pumas.
The 38-year-old is expected to depart Argentina in the coming hours, with only final financial details left to be ironed out. According to Argentine media, the transfer fee is estimated between $1.3 million and $2.5 million, depending on performance-based variables.
Newell’s ultimately accepted the latest offer from the Mexican club after a tense negotiation process. While Navas had made it clear that his desire was to continue his career in Liga MX, the Argentine side sought a deal that would also make financial sense.
A fractious Newell’s exit
Navas’s final days at Newell’s were far from smooth. Once Pumas’ interest became public, the goalkeeper never returned to the starting lineup. Initially sidelined with what was described as a stomach issue, he was later benched for the match against Banfield. His absence and the manner of his exit reportedly caused friction within the club.
Medicals and debut on the horizon
Pumas are eager to bring in Navas as they look to stabilize their defense and recover lost points. The club hopes the three-time UEFA Champions League winner will be available to debut as early as Friday, July 25, when Pumas face Querétaro at the Estadio La Corregidora. Before that, Navas will undergo a medical and finalize his contract.
Mixed feelings in Rosario
Navas’s departure leaves mixed emotions at Newell’s. On one hand, the transfer fee is significant for a player nearing 39. On the other, his absence in recent matches and the way the move was handled drew criticism from some fans and club officials. Now, Navas turns the page and looks to reignite his career in Mexican football, while Newell’s begins the search for his replacement.
