After a 15-year wait, Deportivo Toluca ended their Liga MX title drought when they were crowned champions of Mexican soccer last Sunday, thanks to a 2-0 win over Club América at the Estadio Nemesio Diez.
Toluca stars set for moves?
Throughout the Clausura 2025 tournament, several Toluca players took their performances to the next level - and put themselves in the shop window for a potential move to one of the Liga MX’s Club World Cup representatives.
The Mexican top flight is to be represented at this summer’s Club World Cup by Monterrey, Pachuca and - if they win their play-in tie against Los Angeles FC - América.
Which title winners could be at CWC?
One Toluca star who could end up playing at FIFA’s revamped global tournament is Alexis Vega, who was a crucial figure for Los Diablos Rojos - both in the regular season and in the playoffs. The Mexico forward would be a good fit for any of the three aforementioned clubs.
Another player who excelled for the title winners is the Brazilian center-back Luan, who scored the opening goal in Toluca’s decisive second-leg win in the Clausura 2025 final.
Both Pachuca and Monterrey are looking to strengthen in defense, and the South American could be an option.
Additionally, full-back Jesús Gallardo, midfielder Marcel Ruiz and forward Paulinho were in impressive form during the past Liga MX tournament, potentially sparking interest from Mexico’s Club World Cup teams.
When is the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup?
The first Club World Cup to be played in an expanded, 32-team format, the tournament is to be held from June 14 to July 13, 2025.
The event will be hosted in 12 cities across the United States, with the final to be staged at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
