Match Report

Yves Bissouma has been on his very best behaviour according to Ange Postecoglou ever since the indiscretion featuring the balloon full of nitrous oxide.

He has been uncharacteristically punctual, first into the team meetings, keen to prove a lesson has been learned about responsibility.

And, after being forced to sit out the first game of the season, Bissouma continued the rehabilitation process with a first goal for Tottenham, swerved into the top corner to unleash a comfortable victory to give Postecoglou’s second season lift off.

Heung-min Son pounced on a mistake by Jordan Pickford for the second as Spurs took control and scored the fourth after Cristian Romero had marked his 100th appearance for the club with a goal headed in from a corner.

It was all far too easy against a feeble Everton side who have now leaked seven goals in their opening two games without finding them net.

They arrived in London depleted and patched up, with an injury crisis to go with the other crises gripping the club, which meant a debut for 19-year-old Roman Dixon at right back. Dixon came up against a Spurs debutant of the same age, Wilson Odobert selected to start on the left wing in team designed to create as though Postecoglou expected to have plenty of the ball.

Tottenham took hold of the game from the outset and Pickford had made three fine saves before he was beaten. There was a block from Cristian Romero who should have done better and a flying effort to keep out a deflected shot by Son.

Then he dashed out to smother James Maddison and got lucky when Brennan Johnson missed the target with a header he ought to have scored.

Pickford was helpless as Spurs took the lead. Dejan Kulusevski jinked into the box from the right and teed-up the chance for Bissouma on the edge of the penalty area, who struck it first time with his right foot and saw it swerve into the top corner.

Everton’s goalkeeper was at fault for the second, guilty of a poor touch as he shifted the ball across his body to kick with his left foot. Son pounced on the error, tearing past with a searing burst of acceleration to steal the ball and roll it into an open goal.

Pickford held up his hands in apology. It felt like a long way back from here although Tottenham are so loose, they always offer glimmers of hope. One decent chance to equalise at 1-0, was squandered by Jack Harrison slicing wide on the half volley at the back post.

And there was a spell of pressure before half time when Everton threatened from a series and Spurs panicked at the back. They were vulnerable defending set pieces last season and have worked hard to improve but they are not a powerful team in the air, unlike the visitors.

Maddison was back in his own goalmouth to make a vital clearance denying Abdoulaye Doucoure in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

For a spell after the interval, Tottenham failed to generate the same intensity and Everton flickered briefly after the introduction of Jesper Lindstrom and Iliman Ndiaye. Within seconds of coming on, Lindstrom had forced a splendid save from Guglielmo Vicario.

Postecoglou was quick to respond, sending on Pape Matar Sarr and Richarlison. Maddison went close to the third from free kick before Romero scored it, climbing above James Tarkowski from one of Maddison’s corners.

Son made it four, beating Pickford from a tight angle after an exhilarating run by Micky van de Ven, carving a path down the centre of the pitch before claiming an assist.

Another injury brought concern for Postecoglou. Destiny Udogie came off to be replaced by Djed Spence. New £65million signing Dominic Solanke missed this game with an ankle injury, although the deeper managerial problems belong to Sean Dyche.
