Doherty defends Conte

Former Tottenham star Matt Doherty has defended the rant unleashed by Antonio Conte following the weekend draw to Southampton.

Doherty left the club in January to join Atletico Madrid on a permanent transfer, which shocked a number of people associated with Tottenham. Speaking about his former boss he said: "I hope he stays for a long time at Tottenham. [An] unbelievable coach and manager, he won't say anything in the press that he won't say to his players. He's completely honest with his players and he has the passion for the whole club.

"So for me I hope Tottenham stick by him and hold on to him for as long as possible as he's one of the best managers of all time."

Spurs given new manager plan

It comes as the former Manchester City defender impresses with the Clarets, while Spurs have a huge decision to make over their project for the future.

As replacement options for the summer continue to be linked with the north London club, former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has urged Levy to approach Kompany with the role.

Spurs facing Champions League problem

Regardless of the uncertainty surrounding Antonio Conte's Tottenham future at present, the Lilywhites are still in a very good position to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Missing the opportunity to move above Manchester United and into third heading into the international break, Spurs remain in fourth following their 3-3 draw against Southampton.

A number of teams could pip Spurs to the final qualification spot and even if they do finish in fourth come the final Premier League table, there is one scenario where they would unfortunately miss out on Champions League football in 2023/24.
