Tottenham news: Spurs are currently not for sale but they could become one of the most expensive sports teams in history if they are ever subject to a takeover

Tottenham Hotspur could be on Sheikh Jassim's radar if he misses out on Manchester United, it has been claimed.

Jassim confirmed his intentions to buy the 19-time Premier League winners back in February before submitting a world-record bid in excess of £5billion. The chairman of Qatar Islamic Bank's bid was confirmed only minutes before the deadline.

Should the Qatar businessman succeed in his deal, it would make Man United the most expensive sports team in history by at least £200m. However, Tottenham could benefit from the Red Devils' loss should he miss out on purchasing the club.

According to ESPN journalist Mark Ogden, Jassim and his entourage are setting their sights on the north Londoners. "PSG was a great move [for the club's Qatari owners] because it's Paris, it's a great city, but I think they've found over the years that Ligue 1 is just not big enough,” he told The United Stand.

“They want the Premier League footprint.

"Somebody told me recently, they said that if the Qataris don't buy Manchester United, they'll be back and they might end up buying Tottenham.

"He said, look, if you've got Manchester City owned by Abu Dhabi, you've got Newcastle owned by Saudi Arabia, if Qataris maybe buy Tottenham, then you've got three clubs who can pull away.

"Every year, it would be United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal fighting for fourth spot, which is quite a terrifying prospect for [them]."
