Tottenham's next transfer decided after Ange Postecoglou completes £40m James Maddison deal

Spurs will continue to be busy in the summer transfer window despite having made three signings already, while a number of players will be leaving Tottenham Hotspur Stadium too

Three deals already, but Spurs will not be stopping there, with a defender high on their list of priorities next. There are also sure to be exits for players who have outstayed their welcome at the club and those that do not fit into new head coach Ange Postecoglou's plans.

Where will Spurs strengthen next in the window and who will it be? football.london writers take a look at the player to join next...

He's got the pace, ability on the ball, heading ability, an imposing presence and tactical awareness to flourish in the Australian's very mobile, forward-thinking back four and he also fits the age profile of a classic Spurs signing.

Having turned 24 in February, he's got room to grow while being a very effective central defender for the present and the Bundesliga to the Premier League is an easier adaptation due to the physical and tempo similarities.

Price will be a factor as Spurs will not be held to ransom over their transfer targets, as they proved in switching quickly from David Raya to Guglielmo Vicario, but that also comes from the confidence in their increasingly data-led approach to signings to fit Postecoglou's system.

If they can get Tapsoba through the door though he would provide a very important first step in starting to fix a defence that was utterly broken last season with 63 goals conceded in the Premier League.

The next signing Tottenham make has to be a defender. There can be no question about that. Not that anyone connected with Spurs would complain if another superstar attacking player was signed first, of course. Just that the pressing need is at the back, clearly, for Ange Postecoglou's new setup.

Spurs shipped far too many goals last term and at centre-back is where Postecoglou will be looking to strengthen. There is little doubt that Cristian Romero can be a world-class defender, but thre is a rashness and a rawness in there that needs tempering.

Marc Guehi would probably be my perfect choice, given his Premier League experience with Crystal Palace, but a hefty price tag of around £60 million is likely to be off-putting for a club who just shelled out £40million on James Maddison.

Van de Ven has a better passing accuracy - 88% - than Tapsoba - 86% - in the past season, but he has less experience, so the pors and cons have to be weighed up there. Tapsoba is probably the better choice, but with his transfer comes a problem in January with the Africa Cup of Nations. You would not rule out Spurs signing both this summer.
