Transfer market's BIGGEST losers: Barcelona's £539m black hole tops the list

A new study has revealed the 50 clubs in Europe who have the worst transfer records across the last decade - with a number of Premier League sides featuring.

The CIES Football Observatory has conducted its latest research in an attempt to measure the transfer profits and losses for Europe's top sides.

This was done by analysing the transfer fees - both incoming and outgoing - for non-academy players who moved between 2014 and 2023.

And, following their research, it was revealed that Barcelona had the worst transfer record across the last decade - having lost out on £539million.

Deals such as Philippe Coutinho's £145million move from Liverpool to the Catalan giants, back in 2018, is likely to have contributed to greatly to their losses.

Meanwhile, following just behind Barca, are Todd Boehly's Chelsea - who have made a transfer loss of £412million since 2014.

Notably, players such as Jorginho, Christian Pulišić and Antonio Rüdiger have been a major factor for the club's huge losses.

Surprisingly, Arsenal - who have made major losses on players such as Nicolas Pépé, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette - ranked third on the list.

The Gunners have a transfer deficit of £372million in the last decade but that hasn't appeared to hold them back in their on-field performances.

Following behind the north London side are French giants PSG, who have lost out on £350million since 2014.

Accounting for a large portion of that is Brazilian star Neymar - who joined the club in 2017 for a world-record fee of £198 million.

He left to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal this summer for a fee worth £78million.

In fifth on the list is Manchester United, who have made a transfer loss of £280million since 2014.

Players such as Nemanja Matić, Fred and Juan Mata will have had a large impact on their transfer record.

In addition to those players, the most notable would likely be Paul Pogba who re-joined the Reds for £89.3 million in 2016.

He ended up leaving the club for free to join Juventus in summer 2022.

The remaining five teams, in the top 10, include Italian duo AC Milan and Juventus, as well as Premier League trio Aston Villa, Everton and Liverpool.

Out of the English teams, Villa have the worst transfer record - having lost out on £219million - with Everton's £214million besting Liverpool's £213million.

Interestingly, on the flip side, there are zero Premier League teams that feature in the 10 list for clubs that have generated the most profit since 2014.

That list is lead by French side Lille, who have made £330million through transfer profit. Names such as Nicolas Pépé, Victor Osimhen, Sven Botman will have had a big impact.

Following behind Lille are Dutch side Ajax - who's £271million profit is the second-best in Europe.

Players such as Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Frenkie de Jong have all been sold for generous amounts, since moving to the Eredivisie side.
