Tuchel's Chelsea loan decisions: Fikayo Tomori, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley

Thomas Tuchel has enjoyed a remarkable start to life at Chelsea since he touched down in West London in January, steadying a ship that appeared to be sinking under Frank Lampard before propelling them into the final of both the FA Cup and the Champions League.

The German's focus will be entirely on securing two major honours in his first half a season at the helm, which would be an astonishing achievement - but he will have plenty to think about come the summer when a number of Chelsea players return from their loan spells to find out whether they have a future at the Bridge or not.

Here is a rundown on some of the most familiar faces currently plying their trade away from Chelsea, set to return to their parent club come the end of the campaign.

Fikayo Tomori

The 23-year-old central defender was thrust into the Chelsea first team before eventually being exiled to the bench under Frank Lampard, and was loaned out to Italian giants AC Milan as a result.

The centre-back has enjoyed a productive season in Serie A, helping guide AC Milan to second in the table with just three games left to play.

Though the title has already been wrapped up by fierce rivals Inter, AC Milan can consider this a solid season with the Italian giants also reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Tomori has earned rave reviews for his performances for the Rossoneri, with manager Stefano Pioli a huge fan of the Chelsea loanee.

The AC Milan boss has already expressed his desire to keep Tomori at the San Siro, explaining: "We want to buy Tomori on a permanent deal from Chelsea.

"Our intention is clear and also Fikayo's decision (staying at Milan). We'll see what happens at the end of the season."

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Loftus-Cheek's career has not developed in the way any of his youth coaches would have expected, with the midfielder boasting a staggering level of talent but enduring a career that has thus far been blighted by injuries.

While he won over the hearts of Crystal Palace fans during his loan spell at Selhurst Park during the 2017-18, Loftus Cheek has enjoyed a less fruitful loan spell at Chelsea's West London rivals Fulham.

Scott Parker's side face relegation from the Premier League, with Loftus-Cheek registering just one goal and zero assists in 27 appearances this season.

However, Thomas Tuchel has recently heaped praised on the midfielder, despite conceding his Chelsea future is still up in the air.

When asked if Loftus-Cheek would have a part to play in Tuchel's plans next season, the German said: "It is not decided yet. I was quite a fan of him when he was younger.

"He reminded me of Michael Ballack in his style of play, his movements. There were links with him moving to Germany. We are well aware of his talent.

"I don't know why things have not worked out as he wished but now he is doing good, leaving his footprints there [at Fulham] - I cannot judge him from TV and hearsay, I love to work with players then to give my opinion.

"No decision has been made [on his future] just yet."

Ross Barkley

At one time one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the country, Barkley's career has stalled in recent years - so much so he was deemed surplus to requirements at the Bridge and sent packing to Villa Park for the season.

His time under Dean Smith has been somewhat of a metaphor for his entire career - dazzling in parts, dismal in others.

He has lit up games in a Villa shirt, running Arsenal ragged in Villa's memorable 3-0 win at the Emirates earlier on in the season, but has also had to be disciplined by his manager for booting a water bottle after being substituted.

Tuchel is yet to comment on Barkley's propsects next season, but if he can rekindle the kind of form that led Chelsea to spend £15m on him in 2018 - he may add to the Blues' boss' selection headache.

Ethan Ampadu

At just 20 years of age, you would be forgiven for thinking Ampadu is much older than actually he is.

This is because the midfielder burst on to the scene at such a young age, he officially became the youngest player to win a man of the match award while at previous club Exeter - taking home the gong at just 15.

That immediately garnered attention, with Chelsea snapping up the talent in the summer of 2017.

He made his Blues debut in September 2017 under Antonio Conte, making Ampadu the first player born in the 2000s to play for the club. He was also the youngest debutant for the Blues in the last decade.

More recently, Ampadu has enjoyed loan spells at both RB Leipzig and Sheffield United, where the midfielder currently is - making 25 appearances in a dismal season that has seen the Blades get relegated.

It is unclear whether Tuchel sees him as part of his plans moving forward.

Malang Sarr

Sarr is one of the few on this list who should be confident he still has a future at the Bridge, given he was only purchased last summer.

The centre-back was shipped on loan to Portuguese outfit Porto to further his development before he is thrust into Premier League action.

Chelsea paid just under £15m for the French U21 international, and would deem it a disaster if he was sold before making a single appearance for the Blues.

Marc Guehi

The Ivorian-born English defender is currently on loan at Championship side Swansea, but is clearly highly thought of by his parent club who have just activated an extension in his contract.

Whether this is because Chelsea see the defender as part of their future plans, or they wish to up his price tag given the number of other Premier League clubs circling remains to be seen.

Crystal Palace and Southampton are just two of the Prem outfits monitoring Guehi's situation.

A move to the Bundesliga is also not off the cards, with Borussia Monchengladbach also touted as a potential suitor.

Conor Gallagher

Despite West Brom's relegation being confirmed following their defeat at Arsenal on Sunday evening, Gallagher can hold his head up after his performances in a Baggies shirt.

At 21, Gallagher is not of an age where he can face many more loan spells - just a year shy of Mason Mount, Gallagher may struggle to break into a Chelsea side loaded with talent.

The midfielder has previously spoken positively of his loan experiences, claiming: "Premier League quality will punish you if you switch off, so you need to be concentrated and focused.

"I know people have other views on players going on loan and I’ve been at three different teams, but it’s three different experiences and teams with [different] styles, different managers and players.

"I’ve learnt a lot already in two years. Hopefully I can continue to learn as a player."
