Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone have both been handed a blow with regards to their Champions League campaign, with Yannick Carrasco being handed a three-match suspension by UEFA.

Friday afternoon saw the governing body hand down their decision to punish the Belgian for his red card in the final match of the group phase.

In a clash with Porto in Portugal, the Belgian was shown a red card for his action of grabbing Otavio around the neck and throwing him to the ground with considerable force.

Article 15 of the UEFA Disciplinary Code defines a three-match suspension to be reserved for specific actions where a player or another person present at the match is a victim of assault.

This suspension will definitively keep Carrasco out of both matches against Manchester United in the round of 16 tie, as well as the first-leg of any potential quarter-final tie later in the competition.

Atleti have felt harshly treated by UEFA this season with the governing body having previously suspended Antoine Griezmann for two matches after his red card against Liverpool, although this was later reduced to one game.
