USA midfielder Kellyn Acosta has been praised for his 'great' tactical foul that denied Gareth Bale scoring a potential winner in their 1-1 draw with Wales.
It was in the ninth minute of stoppage time when goalkeeper Matt Turner came way out of his goal to head clear the danger as they hoped to hang onto the point.
The Arsenal back-up's clearance, however, fell into the feet of former Real Madrid star Gareth Bale who looked to pull the trigger.
Up stepped Acosta, to foul his LAFC team-mate as he lunged in to deny the Wales star at the half-way line and prevent any chance of them suffering a defeat in their 2022 World Cup opener in Qatar.
The Texas-born player was shown a yellow card, a small price to pay, when you think they could have lost in the dying stages of the match.
Fans have taken to social media to laud the 27-year-old midfielder for his efforts to ensure the US a point from the match.
One fan claimed: 'One of the greatest tactical fouls of all time.
A second posted: 'I'd give him the game ball for that tackle. Bale was 100% going to score that. I audibly groaned when he wound up to hit it haha.
A third simply agreed, by saying: 'Best tactical foul ever.'
Others were so full of praise that they claimed Acosta pulled off the 'best play in US soccer history' and that it was a 'justified' tactical foul.
One tweeted: 'Literally the best play in US soccer history.
While another added: 'Crime against humanity but well justified.'
Gregg Berhalter's side got themselves off to a dominant start in their clash with Wales, but couldn't manage to hang on in the end.
Timothy Weah, a son of former FIFA Player of the Year and current Liberian President George Weah, scored after a pass from Christian Pulisic in the 36th minute to break the deadlock for the Star and Stripes.
Walker Zimmerman plowed down Bale from behind with the Welsh star's back to the goal in the 82nd minute. Bale stepped up to dispatch from the penalty spot and earn Wales a 1-1 draw, although he could have helped them seal the victory if it wasn't for the tackle of Acosta.
USA will now face Group B favourites England in their next match on Friday evening (7pm kick-off).
