Umtiti, Upamecano... 5 players Arsenal could sign next summer (Mirror)

After a disappointing season so far, it is likely that new Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is going to have a busy summer ahead.

Last year's summer transfer window was a costly one for the Gunners, as they spent £72 million on Nicolas Pepe , who has only shown glimpses of the talent that convinced Arsenal to splash the cash.

They strengthened at the back with the signings of David Luiz and Kieran Tierney, but the defence is still a problem position that needs sorting.

With finances tight at the Emirates, Arteta was only able to bring in Cedric Soares and Pablo Mari on loan in January.

Young prospect William Saliba may be the answer when he arrives in June, but who else will Arsenal be targeting this summer?

Here are five players who could be on Arteta's radar...

Orkun Kokcu

Feyenoord midfielder Orkun Kokcu will be near the top of the Arsenal wish-list after his impressive displays at under-21 level for Turkey.

Kokcu has become a regular for Feyenoord, making 18 appearances so far in the Eredivisie this term and is likely to be included in Turkey’s senior squad for the Euros.

He’s already got two goals and two assists during the campaign and is an exciting prospect, reportedly being tracked by a number of European clubs.

With a reported price tag of £15million , Arsenal will be wanting to get any deal done before his stock rises when the Euros start in June.

Dayot Upamecano

Despite starting the season nursing a knee injury, it’s been another impressive season for Dayot Upamecano.

The 21-year-old was ever-present for RB Leipzig last season and cemented his place as a regular starter for the title-chasing German team at centre-back.

Upamecano is still waiting to make his international debut for France, but has represented them 14 times at under-21 level.

Arsenal are likely to be quoted a large fee for Upamecano, but there aren’t many defenders in Europe with his potential.

Samuel Umtiti

Umtiti had a disappointing start to his season for Barcelona , after being hampered by injuries and struggling to nail down a starting spot.

The recent arrival of Quique Setien has seen him thrown back into the fold, but there are still no certainties over his long-term future.

At 26, Umtiti is an experienced option for the Gunners with 29 French caps and a World Cup to his name.

Umtiti is the biggest name on this list, but after two injury-hit seasons, he might be looking for a challenge elsewhere if he is to fulfil his full potential.

He'll also come with a considerable fee, meaning Arsenal will only have room for either him or Upamecano.

Gabriel Magalhaes

At 6ft 3in, Gabriel is an imposing presence in the Lille back line and is accustomed to the Champions League, having played in all of their group stage ties this season.

The 22-year-old Brazilian is a current regular in a decent Lille side, who are on course to qualify for Europe's top competition again next season.

Reports in France suggest Arsenal had a bid turned down for the Brazilian in January.

A return for his services could be on the cards, but they will have to convince him that Arsenal is the right project if he is to turn his back on his current employers.

Mykola Matviyenko

Shakhtar Donetsk’s Mykola Matviyenko is a Ukrainian left-back, also capable of playing in the centre.

With rumours of a departure for Sead Kolasinac and an injury-hit season for Kieran Tierney, Arsenal might feel like the need for reinforcements on the left side.

Matviyenko has appeared 18 times for Shakhtar this season, and has shown competence in the final third with three goals and three assists.

He is experienced for a 23-year-old, with 20 Ukraine caps under his belt, and would be an inexpensive and versatile addition to Arsenal’s back line.
