Milan legend Marco Van Basten has got himself into trouble in his homeland for making a Nazi remark live on air.
Van Basten was working on Fox Sports as a pundit for the match between Heracles and his former side Ajax.
The Dutchman said ‘sieg heil’, which is a German phrase for ‘siege victory’ and is associated with Adolf Hitler and Nazi rallies.
Worse yet, he said the phrase on a day in which Dutch football was promoting a campaign against racial discrimination.
Van Basten has since issued an apology, saying: “I made a huge mistake and it was stupid on my part.”
The 55-year-old also confirmed that he would make a donation to the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation.
He has been suspended by Fox Sports for one week and will not return until December 7.
